Honeymoon in Egypt: Nile cruise, Red Sea and our advice

Dahabeya or cruise ship, Nile and Red Sea, season, length, budget: our Egyptologists explain how to build an Egyptian honeymoon that alternates temples, sailing and real time to unwind together.

In brief

Egypt makes a remarkable honeymoon as soon as you avoid the trap of an overloaded itinerary. The right formula alternates a few days of temples, a slow sail on the Nile and a proper break on the Red Sea. Here are the benchmarks we give the newlyweds who write to us.

  • Ideal length: 10 to 12 days, including 3 to 4 nights on the Red Sea at the end
  • Best time: October to April for the Nile valley, all year round for the Red Sea
  • Summer wedding: keep the Nile to the essentials and lengthen the Red Sea stay, or move the trip to autumn
  • Most romantic boat: the dahabeya, a sailing boat with only a handful of cabins
  • Most requested combination: Cairo, a cruise between Luxor and Aswan, then the Red Sea
  • Budget to plan: 2,000 € and more per person for a week of high-end tailor-made travel
  • Moments to book early: a hot air balloon in Luxor, a felucca at sunset in Aswan
  • Formalities: one visa per person, no specific paperwork linked to being married

Is Egypt a good destination for a honeymoon?

Yes, provided you see it as a trip in two movements: discovery and rest. Few destinations let you combine, in less than two weeks, the pyramids, a cruise on a legendary river and a sandy beach on one of the richest seas in the world for diving. All of it just one hour ahead of western Europe, so you do not lose the first days recovering.

The real risk is not the destination, it is the pace. A classic tour strings together pre-dawn alarms, domestic flights and two or three sites a day. That programme thrills a curious couple, but it exhausts newlyweds coming out of months of wedding planning. In our honeymoons we keep one major visit per half day and we protect the late afternoons, which are the most beautiful hours in Egypt.

Honeymoon in Egypt: Nile cruise, Red Sea and our advice

Dahabeya or cruise ship: which one for a honeymoon?

For a honeymoon, the dahabeya is our first recommendation. This traditional flat-bottomed sailing boat rarely has more than about ten cabins: no entertainment programme, no buffet queue, but a shaded deck, an attentive crew and stops on riverbanks where the big ships never moor. You sail with the wind, sometimes dine on an island, and the silence of the river becomes the real luxury of the trip.

The classic cruise ship still has real strengths: a pool on deck, spacious cabins, a noticeably gentler price and more frequent departures. It suits couples who mainly want to see the great temples in good comfort. The dahabeya is slower, more expensive and must be booked earlier because it has so few cabins. If the budget allows, it is nonetheless the choice couples mention most often when they come back.

    • Dahabeya: privacy, silence, off the beaten track stops, few cabins to book early
    • Classic ship: pool, spacious cabins, gentler price, frequent departures
    • In both cases, ask for a cabin on the upper deck, brighter and quieter
    • Mention your honeymoon when booking: many crews prepare a little surprise

How do you combine the Nile and the Red Sea on a honeymoon?

In this order: the temples first, the sea afterwards. Ending on the Red Sea means you fly home rested instead of finishing with a four o'clock alarm for Abu Simbel. From Luxor, the road reaches Hurghada in about four hours; from Cairo or Aswan, a domestic flight saves a full day. Marsa Alam, further south, has better preserved reefs and more secluded hotels, ideal for a stay as a couple.

The outline we build most often fits into eleven days: two nights in Cairo for the pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum, four nights cruising between Luxor and Aswan, one extra night in Aswan to enjoy the river without any schedule, then three or four nights on the Red Sea. Our 9 day Nile cruise and Red Sea tour is the short version of it, easy to extend.

    • Days 1 to 2: Cairo, the Giza pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum
    • Days 3 to 7: cruise ship or dahabeya between Luxor and Aswan
    • Day 8: a quiet day in Aswan, felucca and Nubian village, Abu Simbel as an option
    • Days 9 to 11: Red Sea, Hurghada for convenience or Marsa Alam for seclusion

When should you go to Egypt for a honeymoon?

From October to April the Nile valley is at its best: mild days around 22 to 25 °C in midwinter, golden light and cool evenings on deck. The Red Sea is swimmable all year round, with the water rarely dropping below 21 °C. October, November, March and April are our favourite months for a honeymoon: warm without excess, and the sites are quieter than over the Christmas holidays.

Many weddings take place between June and September, exactly when Luxor and Aswan often go above 40 °C. Two solutions work. Either you leave right away, keeping the Nile to three or four days with visits before nine in the morning, and you lengthen the Red Sea stay. Or you push the honeymoon back to autumn, as many couples do, to enjoy the Nile valley in good conditions.

How many days and what budget for a honeymoon in Egypt?

Allow ten to twelve days to experience both sides of the country without rushing. Under a week, it is better to choose: either the Nile, or the Red Sea with a day trip to Luxor. Beyond two weeks, add a night in the desert or a few days in Siwa rather than one more site, because it is the variety of landscapes that shapes the memories.

In terms of budget, a honeymoon usually sits at the top of the range: allow 2,000 € and more per person for a tailor-made week with an Egyptologist guide, hotels with character and private transfers, excluding international flights. The dahabeya, historic palace hotels and a secluded Red Sea resort push the bill up. The item that does not change is the site entry fees, around 200 to 300 € per person on a full tour.

      • 7 days: the Nile or the Red Sea, not both without rushing
      • 10 to 12 days: Cairo, a cruise and the Red Sea, the ideal format
      • 15 days or more: add a night in the desert or the Siwa oasis
      • Items that change the budget: type of boat, hotels, domestic flights

Which romantic moments should you not miss in Egypt?

The best honeymoon memories rarely come from one more temple. They come from a light, a silence, a moment together that you took the time to live. Here are the ones we almost always slip into a newlywed programme, timed for the hour when they are at their most beautiful.

The sunrise hot air balloon over the west bank of Luxor means sleeping in town the night before and must be booked ahead, as places are limited. In Aswan, a sunset felucca ride around Elephantine Island is the simplest and most striking moment of the trip. A dinner on the terrace of a historic palace hotel on the Nile, as you will find in Luxor and Aswan, rounds off a day of sightseeing beautifully.

      • A dawn hot air balloon over the west bank of Luxor
      • A sunset felucca around Elephantine Island in Aswan
      • The temple of Philae, reached by boat on its island dedicated to Isis
      • Dinner on a terrace facing the Nile in a historic palace hotel
      • A boat trip to the Red Sea reefs, snorkelling together
      • A night under the stars in the desert, for couples with a few extra days

How do we plan a tailor-made honeymoon in Egypt?

We start from your wishes and your dates, not from a catalogue. A first conversation sets the balance between sightseeing and rest, the type of boat and the style of hotel. We then propose a day by day itinerary, with a private Egyptologist guide in your language for the visits and private transfers throughout the stay, so that you never have to handle logistics during your honeymoon.

Ideally book four to six months ahead if you are aiming for a dahabeya or the high season, as the best cabins go quickly. During the stay, someone from our team can be reached at any time: a delayed flight or a wish to change a day is handled without you having to think about it.

      • An itinerary built around your dates and your pace, never a fixed tour
      • A private Egyptologist who speaks your language for every visit
      • Ideal booking four to six months before departure for a dahabeya
      • A contact person available throughout the stay, so you never handle logistics
